Alyrian Sailing Introduction

Seafaring Reference Section

Ships Helpfile

As quoted from the Materia Magica website:

Ah, to sail the four seas of Alyria! The sea-faring Adventurer's dream. Through use of Materia Magica's unique ship system, it is possible to buy a ship and use it to sail the wide blue oceans.

Ships allow one to voyage between continents and other landmasses, and take passengers with you, as well. They are an efficient, relatively speedy way of travelling over water. Any PC (player character) can own and control a ship of his own

In addition, some ships are controlled by the denizens of Alyria (non-player characters, or NPCs) - to use those ships one must usually pay a fee of some sort. An example of an NPC-run ship is the Merdraco. The Merdraco travels the Oceanus Ingenii in a semi-circular route. It travels from Rune to Sigil to Pirate's Cove to Tellerium to Templeton and back. It is a free service and can be caught at regular intervals at the docks throughout the land.

Other examples of passenger ships include the Hallowhold and Riddenmast ferries, which, like the Merdraco, charge no fee for their transport services. The Hallowhold Ferry goes back and forth between the Townes of Lowangen and Tellerium, while the Riddenmast Ferry goes back and forth between the Townes of Rune and Sigil.

You've probably heard of the Merdraco, the Riddenmast, and the Hallowhold. They are 3 ships that serve as ferries, that are captained by NPCs, (non-player-characters); those will not be the last time you run into NPC ships as a captain in Alyria. The ferries were probably your first look at sailing in Alyria. But now, you have your own ship, and can sail where ever you want to, and do more with your ship than just sail from port to port.

The Realm of Sailing has had new life breathed into it recently. Ship Player Combat, released this previous summer, allows player ships to fight eachother upon the high seas! Ships within "Ship Player Killing" zones (SPK), level their cannons and aim their ballistae at other ships in an effort to win the battle, and any precious cargo the target ship carries.

Soon Alyria will become plagued with NPC Pirates and Sea Monsters! What kind of treasure these buccaneers and beasts will carry is unknown, but hundreds of alyrians wait in anticipation.
